With more and more foreign experts convinced by our delicious food, recognition of Slovenia grows as the next big culinary destination. You don’t have to take our words for granted! Try out the best Slovenian restaurants and let their delicacies (and awarded Michelin stars) speak for themselves.
1. Gostilna pri Lojzetu (Dvorec Zemono) – One Star Michelin
Gostilna pri Lojzetu now finds its home in the Zemono Manor House and it offers unique culinary delights. They take care of the ingredients and their freshness according to the season and the purity of the flavors. Preparation techniques in the kitchen range from entirely simple to very much traditional, yet they all have something in common. None of them alter the original flavors.
2. Hiša Franko – Two Stars Michelin
Run by Ana Roš, who has long been hailed as one of the best female chefs in the world. Set in a rustic villa outside the town of Kobarid in the far west of the country, a meal here is in high demand, with reservations being mandatory (and further in advance better).
3. Restavracija JB
After more than 25 years in the business JB is firmly entrenched as one of the best restaurant in Slovenia (and one of the top 100 in the world in 2010) with this fine-dining experience coming courtesy of founder and multiple award-winning head chef, Janez Bratovž. Located in one of Jože Plečnik’s more imposing secessionist-style buildings, JB attracts a mix of well-to-do locals and visiting foodies.
4. Hiša Denk – One Star Michelin
Using fresh local produce, Hiša Denk seamlessly blends the past with modernity throughout their dishes, with head chef Gregor Vračko paying close attention to details while crafting complex, flavourful dishes. As Denk is located between two of Slovenia’s Wine Roads, it should come as no surprise that the restaurant has an extensive wine list from Slovenia and the rest of the world.
5. Gostilna Rajh
Passed down through four generations of the Rajh family, Gostilna Rajh has managed to maintain their tradition and passion for food. A younger generation, the two now-grown grandchildren, Valentina and Leon, have also incorporated modern culinary trends into their homely and traditional cuisine, producing some fantastic dishes. Gostilna Rajh prides itself on using locally grown products to ensure that both their traditional and revamped dishes are sophisticated and delicious.
6. Restavracija Strelec
A combination of the Roman Emona, Medieval and modern in terms of both cuisine and ambiance, the menu was created with the help of the brilliant ethnology professor Dr. Janez Bogataj and Mrs. Jožica Drobnič. Historically reminiscent dishes of gourmet modernity are crafted with ingredients from Ljubljana’s famed market by the star of the show: Igor Jagodic. Recognised as one of the top three chefs in Slovenia, he previously worked at the renowned Vila Bled.
7. Gostilna Dvor Jezeršek
In an idyllic location in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinian Alps stands a magnificent, more than 240 year old homestead. Here tradition and modernity go hand in hand, and right here you can also “taste” Slovenia. The cuisine the restaurant offers, is in fact directed towards the presentation of Slovenian cuisine, which is confirmed by the prestigious title Culinary Center “Taste Slovenia”.
We wish you a great culinary journey in Slovenia!
